[Ben Campbell] (0:01): Okay, so hello and welcome to today’s Community Spotlight where I introduce local companies I know and trust and introduce them to you. I’m your host Ben Campbell. Today I am here with Dar Walden, the Dar Walden team.

[Dar Walden] (0:12): Hey Ben, how are you?

[Ben Campbell] (0:13): Good, thank you. So, a funny thing is we’re flipping the switch now. Dar, how many years ago when you interviewed me on the radio? How many years ago was that?

[Dar Walden] (0:23): Probably been about four or five years ago.

[Ben Campbell] (0:26): I thought it was a scam because she called me. I haven’t talked to her yet. She goes, hey, do you want to come do an interview on the radio with me? I’m like, are you asking for money too? What is this?

[Dar Walden] (0:36): I should have. It was my opportunity.

[Ben Campbell] (0:39): Okay, Dar, how did you get into this business?

[Dar Walden] (0:43): You know, I came from an international marketing background overseas. I lived overseas for 15 years and I came in here. We moved to Alaska. My husband was retired military and we, I decided I wanted to get into the real estate business and I started asking around and I was fortunate enough to be able to mentor after the, behind the number one agent in the state, Carol Butler, Carol Douthit. Some people know her as Carol Douthit and she trained me well.

[Ben Campbell] (1:13): Good, awesome.

[Dar Walden] (1:14): Seven years we’ve worked side-by-side.

[Ben Campbell] (1:16): There you go, fantastic. What’s one thing everyone should know about hiring you?

[Dar Walden] (1:23): This one could be dangerous.

[Ben Campbell] (1:25): Yeah.

[Dar Walden] (1:25): Probably, you know, I’m a straightforward person. There’s really not going to be any gray area with me. I’m going to tell you the truth and sometimes, you know, that’s good and sometimes that’s bad. People don’t always love it, but I’m just not that person that’s going to tell you something that you want to hear to win a listing or as a buyer. I believe in transparency and I think that that’s the best way to be.

[Ben Campbell] (1:48): Amen, no fluff, straight to the point.

[Dar Walden] (1:49): No fluff.

[Ben Campbell] (1:50): That’s really good. That’s, a lot of people need that too.

[Dar Walden] (1:53): Yeah, and you know, you have to do it gracefully. There’s a way to go about it, but you know, often when we’re competing with listings out there, the highest price wins and if I don’t think it’s the highest price, I’m not going to tell you your house is worth something that it’s not because in the end, you’re not going to like me anyway because I can’t sell it, right?

[Ben Campbell] (2:10): Yeah, yeah, good. So, a little bit goes off the other one. What’s, what’s unique about the company?

[Dar Walden] (2:16): You know, we’re a team. We’re a family-owned team. I have had six family members in the company and then of course our son passed away, so we’ve got five still and one of the things that we do that I don’t think really anybody else here in town does is we have a listing side and we have a buying side and my buying agents only work with buyers and my listing agents only work with listings because I want them to be the best at what they do and I don’t want them to have 20 balls in the air at one time.

[Ben Campbell] (2:47): No, yeah.

[Dar Walden] (2:47): So, we specialize. We are a team that specializes and we have consistently been the number one team in the state of Alaska for years now.

[Ben Campbell] (2:56): Awesome.

[Dar Walden] (2:56): Yeah.

[Ben Campbell] (2:58): Okay, this is my favorite question. What’s your favorite movie?

[Dar Walden] (3:03): You know, I don’t watch a lot of television, but I would say my favorite movie, old and new, is probably Top Gun.

[Ben Campbell] (3:10): So, both? So, and you had to pick between the old and the new one.

[Dar Walden] (3:14): The old.

[Ben Campbell] (3:14): The old one

[Dar Walden] (3:15): I mean, the new one’s exciting, but the old one is, we have a theater room and we each got to pick one theater picture and mine was Top Gun before the new Top Gun came out.
