[Ben Campbell] (0:00): Hello and welcome to today’s community spotlight where I introduce local companies I know and trust and introduce them to you. I’m your host, Ben Campbell. Today I am here with Mark Thaman at Third Eye Home Inspection. So, Mark, how did you get into this business?
[Mark] (0:18): I got old.
[Ben Campbell] (0:21): You’re good. You’re good. 61. He’s good.
[Mark] (0:24): It was as a construction guy. At some point the tools become so painful that you have to find a way off of them.
[Ben Campbell] (0:38): For sure. Absolutely.
[Mark] (0:39): And that was my goal, was to find a way off of the tools but to use the knowledge that I’ve acquired over 40 plus years. In the construction business. I was just driving down the highway between here and the cabin one day and I was like, man, how am I going to get off the tools? What am I going to do? I don’t know. I just had an epiphany moment and said, hey, why aren’t you looking to be an inspector? So, I did and it was a six to eight-month process because there’s nothing, nobody out there wants to help you. And then dealing with the state and all of their testing and everything, it was a six to eight-month process just to get my license. And then it’s a fight of breaking into the good old boy club because every realtor has their guy.
[Ben Campbell] (1:59): Absolutely.
[Mark] (2:00): So, it’s been a challenge.
[Ben Campbell] (2:03): A journey.
[Mark] (2:03): A journey, yeah.
[Ben Campbell] (2:05): But the beautiful thing is how much experience you bring from all your past construction knowledge into that home inspection space, right?
[Mark] (2:12): Correct.
[Ben Campbell] (2:13): A lot of people don’t have that history of everything from the foundation to the roof. You know everything there is about it.
[Mark] (2:20): That’s right. That’s right.
[Ben Campbell] (2:22): That’s a huge plus.
[Mark] (2:23): There are, I don’t know how many, but there are quite a few out there that just did the bookwork. So, they’re strictly going off of bookwork.
[Ben Campbell] (2:35): Which is not accurate all the time.
[Mark] (2:37): It is not.
[Ben Campbell] (2:37): No. So that’s, that’s really good. What’s one thing everyone should know about hiring you?
[Mark] (2:48): I’m honest.
[Ben Campbell] (2:49): You are an honest guy.
[Mark] (2:50): And I try to do common sense inspections. I don’t write up a scratch on the floor. Or if I do, it’s a maintenance item. It’s not something that is going to stop you from buying the house. I am really looking for those items that would cause concern for the person that doesn’t know the bones of a house. And I’m looking for those broken bones.
[Ben Campbell] (3:25): And he found the broken bones at my place. And he called and he was like, and he was honest. He called me. I had some structural stuff at one of my properties and he was like, I got to tell you because there’s something wrong. Right? And this is something that needs to get fixed.
[Mark] (3:41): That’s right.
[Ben Campbell] (3:42): I appreciate that.
[Mark] (3:43): That’s right.
[Ben Campbell] (3:43): So, what’s unique about your company? It’s a little bit goes off the ones before, you know.
[Mark] (3:53): Right, yeah. My son-in-law was in the military. He was killed two years ago in a helicopter accident. As a firefighter, he had went into that to help people. So, I’ve made it a point to, if you’re a first responder or if you’ve been in the military, you get a nice full 10% discount.
[Ben Campbell] (4:25): Nice.
[Mark] (4:26): I don’t think any other inspector gives that at all. They give you $20, $25 off your inspection. I give you a full 10% right across the board.
[Ben Campbell] (4:37): That’s really nice.
[Mark] (4:39): And if you needed more, I’d give you more.
[Ben Campbell] (4:42): Stand up right there. Okay. My favorite question. What’s your favorite movie?
[Mark] (4:51): Days of Thunder.
[Ben Campbell] (4:52): Oh, you’re kidding. Man, love it. I’ve never been to like any sort of NASCAR race or anything. Have you?
[Mark] (4:59): No, I haven’t. And the reason being, it is such a movie of outside of the dumb stuff. It is a movie of faith. And just the faith that you would have to have to drive through the smoke.
[Ben Campbell] (5:21): Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No way, man.
[Mark] (5:24): It just makes your hair stand on end.
[Ben Campbell] (5:25): I got to see where I’m going. There you go. My wife and I are really into Lost right now, the TV show.
[Mark] (5:33): Yeah.
[Ben Campbell] (5:33): Have you seen Lost?
[Mark] (5:34): I have.
[Ben Campbell] (5:35): Dude, it’s a suspenseful one. Have you seen The 100?
[Mark] (5:38): No.
[Ben Campbell] (5:39): Oh, okay. I’ll have to watch that. All right. There you go. It’s a movie critic show too. Okay. And what’s the best way for them to reach you?
[Mark] (5:50): I have multiple ways.
[Ben Campbell] (5:52): Okay.
[Mark] (5:52): You can reach me on my website at thirdeyehomeinspections.com.
[Ben Campbell] (6:01): Okay.
[Mark] (6:02): You can reach me at 907-240-2488. It is the only number I have. And also, through internachi.com.
[Ben Campbell] (6:19): Okay.
[Mark] (6:19): It is a inspector’s guild that I’m a member, and my information is also there.
[Ben Campbell] (6:28): Okay. Or you can call Ben.
[Mark] (6:30): Yeah, you can call me. I can forward you on. All right?
[Ben Campbell] (6:33): All right, everybody. Thanks for watching. Let’s get to mark some work.
[Mark] (6:36): Thank you.
