With my first delivery I believe I over cooked and they were good but not spectacular. With my last batch I took better care and they turned out spectacular. I would recommend these to anyone.

[Ben Campbell] (0:00): All right, well hello and welcome to today’s community spotlight where I interview local companies I know and trust and introduce them to you. I’m your host Ben Campbell and today I am here with my brother-in-law Nathan Turnbull, Nathan Turnbull from the Happy Mushroom. So, Nathan, how did you get into business with the Happy Mushroom?

[Nathan] (0:23): I worked as a landscaper and construction for about 20 years in England, New Zealand and America and it took its toll on my body.

[Ben Campbell] (0:37): Were you getting old?

[Nathan] (0:38): Yeah, getting old and creaky. So, I was looking for a change in career and I’ve had a kind of a almost a lifelong interest in fungi and biology and plants and in general. I considered a career in studying mushrooms, mycology back when I was about 16 but I went towards landscaping. So, when I was rethinking my career about six, seven years ago, mushrooms came up again and I became a mushroom farmer.

[Ben Campbell] (1:10): You found a need. I mean there’s not a lot of mushroom farmers in Alaska.

[Nathan] (1:14): There are not.

[Ben Campbell] (1:15): And we are in his legit facility here. This is just one of his rooms and I can do a tour later but it’s a good setup. So okay, what is one thing everyone should know about hiring or using your business?

[Nathan] (1:30): I pride myself on a quality product. I grow and sell fresh mushrooms to the general public and a couple of restaurants and I supply a couple of small grocery stores here in Anchorage.

[Ben Campbell] (1:44): Good.

[Nathan] (1:44): So, yeah, quality product, good service and locally grown.

[Ben Campbell] (1:50): Amen. Locally grown.

[Nathan] (1:51): Grown here, not flown here.

[Ben Campbell] (1:53): Not flown here. That’s a good slogan.

[Nathan] (1:55): I didn’t come up with it but I always like it.

[Ben Campbell] (1:57): Yeah, good. Okay, this one kind of goes a little bit off with the last question but what’s unique about your company?

[Nathan] (2:07): As you touched on, there’s not many mushroom growers in Alaska in general. I’m one of two companies in Anchorage. I’m the only year-round mushroom farm in Anchorage as far as I’m aware.

[Ben Campbell] (2:20): Nice. Okay, so yeah, you’re doing the year-round. Now it’s all enclosed.

[Nathan] (2:23): Yeah and I have a new subscription service which I launched about two weeks ago I think. So, people can make one-off purchases or they can sign up for a weekly or a bi-weekly pickup from Anchorage Greens which is next door to me here on 72nd. It’s a $20 value of mushrooms. I believe I’m the only subscription service as well.

[Ben Campbell] (2:50): That’s very unique. Subscription base is awesome. Okay, here’s a fun one. What is your favorite movie?

[Nathan] (2:58): I’m going to go with the movie called Clue.

[Ben Campbell] (3:01): Oh yeah, absolutely. Who’s it, Tim Curry?

[Nathan] (3:05): Tim Curry, the butler. Yeah, I always liked it. It’s funny, clean humor and my daughter’s just gotten into the board game Clue-do and I believe we might all be playing characters from the movie of Halloween this year.

[Ben Campbell] (3:23): Oh really? Is that what we’re doing?

[Nathan] (3:25): Well, I have my family. Yeah, sure. You can be Professor Plum.
