What are people saying about Bird Treatment and Learning Center?
You can learn a lot about the difference birds they help. Ladies were great!
Staff was great! Just wished that we got to see more than just an owl for$300. However, the experience and knowledge the staff shows you was great!
I was able take a nest of baby Juncos here to be rescued. The staff was very kind and happy to receive the birds. I’m so grateful that this place exists.
A baby robin who falls from the nest with the head parent watching closely got attached in my daughters neighbor’s backyard! I was able to take the baby to them! They were very caring and even through the parent hung around for days, they will give him a fighting chance! Please watch your animals & don’t let them attack babies! We need to protect our vulnerable and valuable species on this world!

[Ben Campbell] (0:02): So, hello and welcome to today’s Community Spotlight where I introduce local companies and nonprofits I know and trust and introduce them to you. I’m your host Ben Campbell and today I am here with BIRD TLC, which is Treatment and Learning Center, correct?
[Shondell] (0:16): That’s right.
[Ben Campbell] (0:16): Alright, and who do we have here?
[Shondell] (0:18): Alright, well this is Shavila. Shavila is a magpie who came to us when he was just a baby. We think somebody took him from a nest.
[Ben Campbell] (0:25): Yeah.
[Shondell] (0:25): And my name is Shondell.
[Ben Campbell] (0:27): Shondell. Okay, perfect. So, Shondell, how did you get into this business?
[Shondell] (0:32): I’ve actually been doing this for about 20 years now, a little over 20 years. I started working with animals in zoological settings with lions and tigers and bears in Washington.
[Ben Campbell] (0:46): Yeah.
[Shondell] (0:46): And it’s just something that I’ve always wanted to do. I grew up in a little remote village in Alaska and just thought this is what I was going to do with my life.
[Ben Campbell] (0:55): This is, so I live up the street and I drove past this a thousand times but have not stopped by. This is super cool. This is a super cool place. If you have not been here, get in touch with them. So, what’s one thing everyone should know about this organization, this business?
[Shondell] (1:11): Yeah, so the primary thing that we do here is rehabilitation of wild birds. So, our main goal always when a bird comes to us is to get it back out into the wild. So, the public really helps us with that by bringing in orphaned and injured wild birds.
[Ben Campbell] (1:26): Yeah.
[Shondell] (1:27): And then we do our best to get them back out into the wild.
[Ben Campbell] (1:29): Very cool. Very cool. This is, we’re inside the cage right now. This is awesome. So, and then what’s unique about this organization? I mean, it goes a little bit off of what you guys do, but what would you say is unique?
[Shondell] (1:42): I think what’s unique is that we have a pretty big volunteer base.
[Ben Campbell] (1:47): Okay.
[Shondell] (1:47): Folks that have been here for years and years and then some that are just starting with us.
[Ben Campbell] (1:52): Yeah.
[Shondell] (1:52): And so, we really rely a lot on the community and the volunteers to help us, help us run our facility.
[Ben Campbell] (1:58): Cool. Very cool. Volunteers are always key to make us some nonprofits and whatnot successful. So, this is, this is, this is, usually it’s nothing like this, right? And this is, this one’s directly to you. What is your favorite movie?
[Shondell] (2:14): Oh man, my favorite movie. I would probably have to say the old Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth.
[Ben Campbell] (2:23): Oh, wow. Old school. I love it. Okay. And so, what’s the best way for them to reach you or donate or what’s the best way?
[Shondell] (2:32): Yeah. So, if you want to go to our website, which is birdtlc.org, that’s a great way to find everything that we do. It has our education link, our rehabilitation link, and we’ll even be having public programs this summer. So, for the first time, we’ll actually have a public here who can come and see the birds and check out what we do. So, that’ll be starting in mid-June and you’ll find all that information on our website.
[Ben Campbell] (2:57): Perfect. Okay. Alright, everyone. Thank you for watching. Alright.
